Purchasing flood insurance for your home or business isn't something to overlook. Most property insurance plans (whether for residential or commercial buildings) do not provide financial protection in the event of a flood. This means you could suffer substantial loss to your building and contents if a flood occurs and your current insurance may not provide support to you. But a flood insurance plan may. It's important to know what type of coverage this is and what is included in a standard policy.
Structural and Building Protection
The main component of flood insurance is property coverage for the primary structure named in the property. This provides a wide range of support for the actual building and the systems within it. Coverage generally includes:
- The building itself including its foundation (a common area of damage in floods)
- The electrical system of the covered building
- The plumbing systems of the covered building
- The HVAC systems — including the air conditioning, heating, and water heating system
- Large and built-in appliances — including dishwashers, refrigerators, cooking stoves and others
- Covering for a home's carpeting and other flooring that's permanently installed
- The building's walls including paneling, bookcases, wallboard, and cabinetry
- Window coverings such as blinds
In addition to this type of structural coverage, flood insurance can expand further to include other detached structures on the property named in the policy. These may include garages. Keep in mind that other buildings, such as storage spaces, must either be mentioned in the policy itself or be covered through a separate building policy.
Flood insurance also provides additional support. This includes covering most of your personal content stored within the structure itself including clothing, food within your refrigerator, portable and window air conditioners and washers and dryers. These policies also provide debris removal, as well as coverage for most types of valuables you own, up to a specific level per item or in total (this generally is $2,500).
With the help of flood insurance, you do not have to worry about being protected when there is significant water damage to your home. Even these policies have limitations, but the structure of your building is protected from the risks that occur when water comes into your home due to an unpreventable or accidental incident.
