Sun Safety on Your Boat

Soaking up the sunshine on the deck of your boat can be an enjoyable, relaxing experience. But too much sunshine can take its toll on your health. The key to a great boating excursion is safety. Watch for these three health risks that can occur from overexposure to the hot sun.

Heat Exhaustion man riding on white and red boat on sea during daytime

Heat exhaustion is when your body accumulates too much heat and cannot get rid of it quickly enough. Symptoms include an increase in body temperature, dizziness, headache and pale or damp skin. You can prevent the effects by taking breaks in cooler places, dressing in weather-appropriate clothes and slowing down during outdoor activities. If you feel overheated, find a way to cool down even if it means hopping in a cool shower.

Someone may need medical attention if they display signs of delirium, a temperature over 101 degrees or the inability to keep fluids down.

Sunburn

Apart from temporary pain, sunburns can contribute to increased risk for skin cancer. Limit sunbathing to 20 minutes per day and always apply sunscreen for protection. Symptoms include red, inflamed skin that becomes sensitive to touch and heat. You can prevent the effects by wearing sunscreen with at least 30 SPF, limiting your time in the sun and wearing protective clothing like a hat and sunglasses. If you get a burn, take a cool bath and liberally apply aloe vera gel.

Someone may need medical attention if they display signs of delirium or have visible burn blisters.

Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when your body doesn’t get enough water to continue functioning properly. Symptoms include headache, dry lips and low urine output. You can prevent the effects by drinking pure water continually, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you get dehydrated, move out of the heat to rest and drink cool water.

Someone may need medical attention if they display signs of unconsciousness, vomiting, clammy skin or shallow breathing.

We care about your safety. Call us for more information on boat insurance.
