Preparing A Business For Flooding

Flooded Conference RoomFlood damage is a complicated insurance issue. Generally, standard commercial property insurance does not cover flood damages to a business.

This is a grave concern, since flooding is more prevalent than you might think. In fact, prolonged precipitation, damaged dams or levees and even burst pipes could flood an office or worksite. And if a flood occurs, a business could face massive damages.

Fortunately, business do have a measure of recourse — assuming they think ahead. Businesses that face a high risk of flood damages can buy a flood insurance policy. This policy is separate from standard commercial property insurance, and it provides compensation for many common flood damages.

Still, businesses should do all they can to reduce the risk of flood damages in their spaces. By taking steps to reduce damage risks, business owners can ensure that their insurer will honor claims.

Ways to Reduce Flood Damages in Businesses

There's a chance that floods could strike your business at any time. As a business owner, do all you can to mitigate flood risks.
  • Know the facts about local flood hazards. If your business' location has a high risk for floods, consider buying a flood insurance policy.
  • Store systems like data networks and computers in relatively low-risk areas. Keep them in elevated places where water is not likely to reach.
  • Perform regular systems backups so you don't stand to lose data if damage occurs.
  • Have your plumbing inspected regularly, and address potential problems. A burst pipe could easily flood your business.
  • Keep important business materials in a waterproof storage mechanism.
Furthermore, if a flood threatens, take steps to further protect the businesses:
  • Evacuate important business materials and systems to a safe place. Take them to an elevated area or to another location that is at a low risk for floods.
  • Move company cars and other business property off the premises.
  • Secure or remove inventory to a safe place, if doing so will reduce the risk of damages.
  • Send employees and patrons home. Do not allow them to risk their own safety inside the business.
  • Turn off vital units, such as electrical, plumbing and ventilation systems. This can reduce the risk of further damages.
Most importantly, get in touch with your business insurance provider. They can tell you how your policy covers flood damages. They can also give you other tips to prevent flood damages, so you can be sure your policy honors your claims.

While it may be hard to predict if a flood will strike, there are still many things to do to protect your business in the event.

Make sure you're protected. Call McInnis Insurance Services, Inc. at (844) 926-0860 for a free Louisiana flood insurance quote today.
